Travels
My travel addiction began in earnest in 1998 when Chris and I took our first journey across the pond. Luckily, we were both equally entranced with seeing more of the world, and from that point on we travelled every chance we got. First it was just ten to fourteen day jaunts to Europe, either cruising or— as soon became our preference—just the two of us in a car. We’ve never been ones for motorcoach one-size-fits-all tours, so lighting off on our own seemed a natural. Except we began before the time of GPS! Those early road trips were true adventures as Chris drove and I guided, paper map in my lap—not even understanding the road signs. Eventually, we ventured outside of Europe and finally, when we put boot to ground in Antartica in 2015, we had explored all seven continents.
Our travel habit soon outstripped our vacation days, and we eventually ‘retired’ so that we would be free to go more places, more frequently. While some trips are luxurious, many are just fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants penny saving treks. I have never been to a new locale where I failed to learn something about myself through the people, or through the history of the place.
My writing is greatly influenced by lessons learned on the road—either through the ‘otherness’ of the place, or its people—and as such my facebook and instagram posts frequently combine travel photos and insights with literary references.
I hope you will come along for the ride.
